Methodology & data notes
This page explains what the figures on HealthCalc.fit mean, how the calculators work and where their limitations begin.
BMI calculator
For metric measurements, BMI is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Imperial measurements are converted before the same calculation is applied. Adult BMI categories shown on the site are screening ranges, not a diagnosis.
Daily calorie calculator
The calculator estimates basal metabolic rate with the Mifflin–St Jeor equation and multiplies that estimate by the activity factor selected by the visitor. The maintenance result is therefore an estimate of daily energy expenditure, not a measured value. The mild loss and gain figures apply a modest adjustment to that estimate.
Food calorie pages
Food pages present calorie values in several serving units to make comparison easier. Values are approximate: variety, brand, preparation, cooking method and water content can all change the energy content of a food. Use packaging or a verified product label when an exact branded value matters.
Recipe nutrition
Recipe nutrition is shown per serving and is intended for planning and comparison. Ingredient brands, substitutions, portion sizes and cooking losses can change the final values. Allergy and dietary labels should always be checked against the actual ingredients used.
When calculators are not enough
Pregnancy, childhood, medical conditions, eating disorders, prescribed diets and some athletic circumstances require more individual context than a general-purpose calculator can provide. In those situations, use the site only as general information and seek appropriate professional advice.
